Philanthropy

The MVNCI Committee has chosen the Vietnamese Youth Development Center (VYDC) as the focus of this year’s charitable efforts. VYDC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit located in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district that aims to provide immediate assistance to immigrant youth in their adjustment to American life and to encourage and empower youth to participate actively in the development of their community. It was founded in 1979 by a group of Vietnamese refugees who had settled in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district who recognized an urgent need for support and practical assistance as they adjusted to their new home. Over the years, the VYDC has grown to serve an increasingly diverse population of immigrant youth from Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos between the ages of ten and twenty-one years old. About 650 youth are served annually through job-readiness, substance abuse prevention, counseling/case management, youth development groups, educational counseling, after-school, leadership training, and arts and recreational programs.
